Low Key Hike: Lion's Den Gorge Nature Preserve

In Grafton, along the shores of Lake Michigan, hides Lion’s Den Gorge Nature Preserve. This 73 acre county park is open year round to the public. It features a ½ mile of gorgeous views of Lake Michigan from atop the bluffs along with several miles of hiking trails.

From the parking area, strike out on the Waterfowl Walk and enjoy the well-kept boardwalk through the wetland. The park is adjacent to wetlands owned by the US Fish and Wildlife Service in order to enhance populations of waterfowl and other wildlife.

This trail meets up with the Bluff trail which boasts fantastic viewing areas of the lake. The bluffs here are 100 feet tall.

Heading north on the Bluff Trail takes you through a forest toward a steep staircase which gives you access to the beach.  Use of the stairs to reach the beach is essential because any unnecessary climbing will contribute to the erosion of the bluffs.

There is an easy loop around the gorge that can be accessed via the wheelchair accessible Lion's Den Trail or a wooden bridge near the staircase.

In addition to the wetlands, ravines and bluffs, visitors can hike through hardwood forests and grasslands. Spring brings an explosion of wildflowers. The Trillium Trek is great place to see these threatened flowers, but the whole park has great offerings during any season.

Lion's Den Gorge Nature Preserve is a beautiful park that is the product of dedicated preservation. It is a great place to wander for a couple hours with minimal physical exertion. I saw many families with small children enjoying the trails. And since it is a county park, no fees!
